Julianne Zegers

Artist and Art Educator Julianne Zegers sculpted food into group portraits and landscapes for “Don’t Play with your Food!”
A painting of a brown paper bag, and two slices of bread laying on top of the bag. One slice has peanut butter spread, the other has jelly.

“Don’t Play with your Food!” challenged the rule to never play with what we eat as Artist and Art Educator Julianne Zegers sculpted food to look like group portraits and landscapes, then turned them into oil paintings and monotypes.

With food as her model, Julianne Zegers creates sculptures that evoke a reaction. Topics of bullying, love, anger, discomfort are explored. Every painting tells a story, subjective to the viewer’s personal experience.

Painting of full and broken pretzel sticks on top of a crumpled brown paper bag.

Stories: What’s happening here?

A painting of a brown paper bag turned upside down, with a green lollipop and red lollipop in the foreground.

Conversations: What are they talking about?

A painting of four candy bars. One candy bar is off to the left with an open wrapper, the remaining three are in the right corner and wrapped.
